Financial Analyst

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Financial Analyst reports directly to the Vice President for Finance (VP) and works in a collaborative manner with the other four direct reports of the VP including: Director of Financial Resources, Controller, Director of Student Accounts, and Director of Human Resources. The Financial Analyst plays a key support role in the annual planning and budget process at Aurora University. Throughout the year, the Financial Analyst is responsible for monitoring monthly financial activity, making budget adjustments, managing position control, preparing financial forecasts and other trend analysis reports, and drawing conclusions and/or making recommendations as appropriate. The Financial Analyst acts as an expert and resource for both academic and administrative budget managers regarding budget questions, financial analyses, and special ad hoc reporting.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Represents Aurora University in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community we serve. Interacts effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and other customers of our service, learns and uses operating practices of the department and Aurora University.

- Handles confidential information with tact and discretion.
- Plays a key support role in the annual planning and budget process. This includes creation, compilation, and analysis of budget, statistical, financial and supporting trend data into a single comprehensive budget document for presentation to the Board of Trustees at its April meeting. Also, responsible for assisting in semi-annual budget revision process and approval in the fall.
- Performs detailed analysis and trending of financial data and reports, such as contribution analysis, head count, and financial indicator and dashboard updates. Compiles, analyzes and interprets financial data and identifies corresponding policy implications and/or recommendations.
- Analyzes revenues and expenditures and prepares analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
- Prepares studies on the cost allocations to colleges and departments. Builds analyses of space use and associated costs to be able to allocate space costs to colleges and departments.
- Designs and builds financial models and reports that contributes to the financial planning efforts of the Finance Department.
- Serves as a resource and expert on financial issues and processes to deans and department heads.
- Performs departmental profit and loss analyses.
- Assists in development and monitoring of position control.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares standard and special reports.
- Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in business preferred. Three to five years business experience required; higher education/not for profit experience a plus.
- High level of organizational skills and an in-depth ability to understand business and accounting policies, processes and procedures.
- Must be able to handle multiple priorities at one time and to effectively meet deadlines as required.
- Strong analytical skills as required for creative problem solving, account analysis and budget preparation.
- Proficient in use of financial software, spreadsheets and word processing (preferably DATATEL, Microsoft EXCEL and Microsoft WORD).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to interact in person, over telephone and via written and electronic media.
- Ability to exercise good business judgment and make sound choices.
- Reliable and dependable.
