Graduate Certificate in Leadership Course Descriptions
MBA6030 ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR AND LEADERSHIP
This course introduces students to an advanced treatment of the behavioral
role of the leader interacting with others within the organization.
It offers a critical review of leadership and human behavior, and addresses
those behavioral concepts that influence such factors as group dynamics,
interpersonal relations, and ultimately, organizational effectiveness.
This course is part of the M.B.A. core. Prerequisite: BUS3200 Foundations
of Management
MBA6610 INNOVATIVE LEADERSHIP FOR CHALLENGING TIMES
The course will explore the literature on leadership as it applies to
the complexities of the current business environment by focusing on
three related yet independent topics. In addition the course will focus
on what companies can do to develop tomorrow’s leaders and how
to overcome the inevitable conflict and resistance to change associated
with any realignment of strategic vision.
MBA6610 Topics Include:
- Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders: Succession
planning is more than just identifying individuals who could step
into more responsible positions. It is developing them so that they
can capitalize on what their predecessors have done and take those
accomplishments to successively higher levels. Coaching, competency
modeling and mentoring are included.
- Evolution of Leadership: This topic includes but is not limited to
an overview of leadership, a history of management/leadership, discussion
of characteristics/behaviors of leadership, servant leadership and
followership.
- Leading in a Complex Environment: Today’s business surroundings
are both difficult and complicated. Effective leadership requires many
unique competencies. This topic helps leaders prepare and/or adjust to
today’s complex organizational environments.
MBA6620 CREATIVE STRATEGIES FOR PROBLEM RESOLUTION
The course will explore innovative strategies for overcoming barriers
to the ethical resolution of conflict and crisis by focusing on three
related yet independent topics. Students will also discuss moral, ethical
and legal issues that affect the ability to lead an organization.
MBA6620 Topics Include:
- Conflict Resolution: Leadership is about people.
People are about conflict, both functional and dysfunctional. This
topic addresses the field of conflict and negotiation as they relate
to a leader’s
subordinates, peers and superiors (i.e., vertical and horizontal).
- Crisis Strategies: Too little preparation is given leaders who regularly
face crises, self-made and not. This topic specifically addresses
the continuum of crisis possibilities and how to deal with each type
along it.
- Moral, Ethical and Legal Leadership: There are many issues facing
leaders that challenge them morally, ethically and legally. High-profile
companies have been destroyed by leaders who either did not understand
the implications or who made willfully incorrect decisions. This topic
examines approaches to these issues and offers useful guidelines for
leaders.
MBA6630 CREATIVITY AND THE PROCESS OF INNOVATION
The course will examine today’s global marketplace where the organizations
that thrive are the ones that anticipate change and create new adaptations
to their business model by focusing on three related yet independent
topics. Creativity is the key to finding new opportunities and establishing
a competitive advantage through collaborative teams and the use of organizational
alliances and strategic partnerships.
MBA6630 Topics Include:
- Creating Competitive Advantage Through Teamwork: In most circumstances, command-and-control leadership is a thing of
the past. Sole-contributor employment is equally outdated. Teams are
at the heart of most functions and projects. All stages of teamwork (forming,
storming, norming, performing and reforming) are studied.
- Emerging Topics: This topic addresses “hot issues” with
the theme and subject matter changing each time it is delivered. Current
events, emerging concepts, new leaders and the like are identified,
analyzed and discussed.
- Global Alliances & Partners: Most companies do not operate in
the vacuum of one neighborhood. Even if they did, neighborhoods have
diverse demographic characteristics. This topic provides considerations
for leaders working with multinational companies.
Certificate Requirements:
- Completion of nine semester hours at the graduate level is
required for the Leadership certificate.
- Courses taken within
the certificates can be applied toward the M.B.A. Degree.
