Tests Required for Certification in Illinois
The list below provides information regarding the types of tests that are required for specific types of certification.
All test results should be reported to Aurora University (code 003). You may apply for admission to the College of Education prior to taking any tests.
Elementary Education
- Basic Skills Test (096)
All teacher candidates, regardless of program or level, must pass the Basic Skills Test (096) before admission to the College of Education. A test preparation course is offered by the Aurora University Center for Teaching and Learning.
- Content-Area Test
The College of Education requires that all elementary education candidates (for grades K-9) pass the Content-Area Test for Elementary/Middle Grades (110) prior to student teaching.
- Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) Test
- All undergraduate elementary education candidates must pass the Assessment of Professional Teaching: Grades K–9 (102) test in order to be certified by the State of Illinois.
- All graduate elementary education candidates must pass the Assessment of Professional Teaching: Grades K–9 (102) test prior to student teaching.
On the ICTS registration forms, request the results to be reported to both Aurora University and yourself. Or, present your mentor or advisor with a copy of the test results sent from ICTS.
Test registration should be completed on-line. The ICTS Web site also provides test content details and practice tests.
Secondary Education
- Basic Skills Test (096)
All teacher candidates, regardless of program or level, must pass the Basic Skills Test (096) before admission to the College of Education. A test preparation course is offered by the Aurora University Center for Teaching and Learning.
- Content-Area Test
The College of Education requires that all candidates pass the appropriate Content-Area test (as specified below) prior to student teaching.
- Science: Biology (105) - Biology majors
- Social Science: History (114) - History majors
- English Language Arts (111) - English certification majors
- Mathematics (115) - Math majors
- Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) Test
- All undergraduate secondary education candidates must pass the must pass the Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT): Grades 6–12 (103) test in order to be certified by the State of Illinois.
- All post baccalaureate secondary education candidates must pass the Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT): Grades 6–12 (103) test prior to student teaching.
