Community Service for Computer Scientists

As growth occurs in the various segments of society, the nation has witnessed corresponding growth in what has become known as the "digital divide." This is the difference in resources that gives some groups much greater access to technology and information resources.

In order to raise awareness of the technological impact of the information age, the Computer Science Program at Aurora University has been awarded an ACI partnership grant. Under the direction of Dr. John W. Gudenas, this project is designed to help local community agencies that are involved with instruction in information technology bridge this digital divide.

This website has been created as part of the project, and lists many local Fox Valley community service agencies and their missions as well as ways for interested parties to volunteer their services to these agencies.

Curriculum material has also been developed and added to graduating computer science students' capstone coursework. This material was designed to create an awareness of the relation of information technology to society. It offers instruction to students in possible solutions to the digital divide by focusing attention in the community. The syllabus for this course is also posted on the grant web site.
