The course is organized into modules which include nursing history, nursing education, economics and politics, and comparative health care systems. The purpose of the course is to focus on the development of health care in relation to; the historical perspective; politics and economics with an emphasis on the cultural context as well as the profession of nursing. Students will have the opportunity to visit health care agencies and schools of nursing in the metropolitan area of London, England with potential day trips to Swanze, Wales and Paris, France. Students will ultimately compare and contrast the health care system in the United Kingdom with the health care system in the United States. History, culture, politics and economics will be explored as concepts affecting the past, present and future directions of global health care systems. Prerequisites: Consent of instructor; This course will meet General Education ?Knowing Ourselves and Others? Group B requirement and/or the RN to BSN Track requirement NUR 3090 Transcultural Nursing. Instructors: Nancy Petges and Deann Edgers Special considerations: The travel component will involve extensive walking, stair climbing and foot travel over potentially rough terrain, cobble stone streets and sidewalks. Ability to carry your own luggage and supplies will be expected. Travel costs and fees: $3,000 to include airfare, board and lodging in addition to tuition of $1960. On campus meetings: TBA: Estimated 3 meetings for a total; pre-travel/informational meeting; class time; 8 hours of pre-travel class time in May.
