In philosophy and in literature, the concept of hell has been put to imaginative use, yielding unexpected insights into hope, redemption, and moral action, even as the concept also provides a vehicle to expose evil, corruption, and personally destructive behaviors in "this life." Moreover, the concept of hell becomes a revealing lens when exploring how authors have tried to make sense of systematic efforts to dehumanize people (such as the totalitarian camps of the 20th century). The course draws on a range of 20th century works of fiction, in addition to earlier religious texts, religious art, and a trip to the Illinois Holocaust Museum. No prerequisites. Additional course fee of $12.00.
