MINOR IN AMERICAN CULTURAL AND ETHNIC STUDIES 18 semester hours
The American Cultural and Ethnic Studies minor offers an interdisciplinary perspective on race, ethnicity and culture in America. Included are those courses, which treat the subject matter from a culturally diverse perspective. The focus of the minor includes, but is not limited to the following American ethnic groups: African American, Latino, Native American and Asian American populations. The objective is to study the group experiences, histories and ancestral background of the respective groups.

Aims

  1. Helping students develop critical thinking using a culturally inclusive perspective for understanding their own cultural view of the world and of others;
  2. Recognizing and appreciating diversity within a larger community;
  3. Acquiring the knowledge necessary for cross cultural understandings and interaction; and
  4. Providing the opportunity to explore the distinctives of one's own ethnic heritage such as: world view, economics, religious systems, aesthetics, social and political behaviors, cultural priorities and responses to historical influences.

The minor would be attractive to students in the health professions, education, public policy, social work, business and communications, criminal justice, sociology, psychology and history. The proposed fifteen-hour minor would include selections from the following course list:

Students may complete a minor in art by choosing 18 semester hours from the Art Program. The selection must include a minimum of 3 semester hours of Art Appreciation or Art History.

This minor is exclusively offered to non-business majors. It is strongly recommended for those students seeking a general understanding of business principles and practices.

MINOR IN COMMUNICATION 18 semester hours
Communication also makes a very flexible and adaptable minor that works well in combination with majors like business, education and even history and English. A communications minor can be made up out of any combination of courses within the department totaling 18 credits. However, students will be encouraged to think carefully about the how the mix of courses that they pick will affect their career plans. For example a future educator intending to teach some communication courses in high school would be well advised to lean towards courses in the media studies track rather than courses in professional practice.

MINOR IN EDUCATION 18 semester hours
The purpose of this minor is to accommodate the person who is interested in education, but does not seek Illinois State Board of Education certification for public school teaching. Teaching and learning occur in many settings, so this minor is of value to students interested in child care, youth activities, social service, adult education, and parenting.

This interdisciplinary minor provides an opportunity for students to explore issues surrounding gender from a variety of academic perspectives.

MINOR IN INTERNATIONAL STUDIES 18 semester hours
The International Studies minor provides students with an opportunity to explore and learn from a multi-disciplinary perspective how to live and work in a complex and diverse world.

The goals of this minor are twofold: 1) to help students gain the knowledge and information necessary to live and work effectively and harmoniously in our complex world; and 2) to help students develop critical thinking and analytical skills by using an international perspective to recognize and understand the diversity of people and cultures in the world.

The minor will be attractive to students interested in international business and government, as well as to fields such as education, nursing, and social work, where graduates will interact with people of diverse cultures.

MINOR IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES 18 semester hours
The minor in Religious Studies encourages students to explore issues of personal faith, whether their own or those of others, or both, in a rigorous, sympathetic yet critical way. Religion will also be studied as a social phenomenon. It is therefore an ideal minor for those majoring in the behavioral sciences and political studies, as well as history and other cognate subjects. A student who engages in Religious Studies as a minor will therefore learn to assess both personal issues of truth, ethics and values; but also how religion shapes and is shaped by broader societal forces.

A minimum of 18 semester hours must be completed with at least one course selection from each section and at least 8 hours at 300 level.
