EDU210 How Schools Work (3 semester hours)
This introduction to education provides an overview of the legal and organizational structure, as well as the history of, American public schools.

EDU/ENG218 Children's Literature (3 semester hours)
Survey of children's literature and its authors and illustrators emphasizing criteria for selection and the development of children's appreciation for literature and reading based on specific literary genre.

EDU219 Young Adult Literature in the Classroom (3 semester hours)
The distinctive needs, interests and learning styles of young adults is explored and addressed. Procedures for the evaluation, selection and integration of young adult literature into the curriculum are examined. Students learn that the young adult novel deserves a legitimate place in the classroom.

EDU220 History and Philosophy of Education (3 semester hours)
The American education system as it is today. An introductory professional education course. The role of education in society. Study of the contemporary scene in education, including the multicultured developmental history of education in America and the important philosophical ideas that have shaped it.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing.

EDU226 Educational Psychology (3 semester hours)
The knowledge that is basic for teaching, regardless of subject or level, will be explored, including child growth and development, the learning process, learning styles, the evaluation of learning, and effective teaching. The multicultural, exceptional, and disadvantaged child are included.
Prerequisite: EDU220.
Concurrent: EDU290-1 or 2 recommended.

EDU290-1 Career Exploration Field Experience: Pre-Teaching (Elementary) (1 semester hour)
The student logs a minimum of 50 clock hours of clinical experience in an elementary school. Helps the student determine if teaching should be his/her career goal and provides an experiential background for assimilating future professional education courses.
Prerequisites: Must be planned in consultation with the education advisor prior to registration.

EDU290-2 Career Exploration Field Experience: Pre-Teaching (Secondary) (1 semester hour)
The student logs a minimum of 50 clock hours of clinical experience in a junior or senior high school setting. Helps the student determine if teaching should be his/her career goal and provides an experiential background for assimilating future professional education courses. Must be planned in consultation with the education advisor prior to registration.
Prerequisites: EDU226 and EDU290-01; acceptance into the School of Education; concurrent enrollment in EDU375.

EDU336 Methods of Teaching Mathematics (3 semester hours)
The content of the elementary math curriculum and the methods of teaching it. Students learn a variety of techniques for helping children understand and utilize math concepts. Needs of multicultural and exceptional children are examined.
Prerequisites: EDU220, EDU226, MAT121-122 or equivalent, and EDU290-1. Acceptance to the College of Education. Concurrent registration in EDU375 suggested.

EDU337 Methods of Teaching Science (2 semester hours)
Methods of teaching science in the elementary school with major emphasis on curriculum development and teaching, including the use of the inquiry approach. Includes ways of modifying instruction to meet the needs of multicultural and exceptional children.
Prerequisites: EDU220 and EDU226; acceptance into the College of Education


EDU338 Methods of Teaching Social Studies (2 semester hours)
Methods of teaching social studies in the elementary school with major emphasis on curriculum development and teaching, including use of the inquiry approach. required; concurrent registration in EDU375 suggested.
Includes ways of modifying instruction to meet the needs of multicultural and exceptional children.
Prerequisites: EDU220 and EDU226; acceptance into the College of Education required.

EDU340 Philosophy and Methods of Outdoor Education (3 semester hours)

EDU342 Methods of Teaching Language Arts (3 semester hours)
Students will develop an understanding of the methods of teaching language arts with an emphasis on best practices and the development of a community of learners where a love for literature and writing is cultivated.
Prerequisites: EDU220 and EDU226; concurrent registration in EDU375 suggested; acceptance into the College of Education required.

EDU344 Middle School: Mission and Methods (3 semester hours)
Study of the physical, mental, and emotional characteristics of the adolescent and of methods and strategies to employ with this age group, emphasizing teaching techniques that are the most appropriate and effective for the adolescent student.
Prerequisites: EDU220, EDU226, and EDU290; acceptance into the College of Education required.

EDU348 Methods of Teaching Reading (3 semester hours)
Introduction to reading theory and instructional methods. Examines a variety of approaches to the teaching of reading. Simulation activities allow students to explore and critique current instructional practices and techniques.
Prerequisites: EDU220, EDU226, and EDU290-1; concurrent registration in EDU375 suggested; acceptance into the College of Education required.

EDU375 Career Investigation Field Experience: Methods Practicum (2 semester hours)
A field-based course providing students with teaching experience while they are taking the methods courses. Students will teach classes in reading, math science, language arts and/or social studies throughout the term. They will be responsible for planning, teaching and evaluation under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher at the school and the Aurora University supervisor.
Prerequisites: EDU220, EDU290-1 or EDU290-2; concurrent registration in at least one methods class; acceptance into the College of Education required.

EDU382 Secondary Methods Course in the Content Area (3 semester hours)
Techniques that are effective in teaching in the content area. Covers lesson planning, classroom arrangement, classroom management, curriculum design, alternative teaching strategies, evaluation, etc. In addition to the classroom phase, there is a simultaneous practicum component. Should be taken as near to the student teaching term as possible.
Prerequisites: Students are required to have completed at least 12 semester hours in their major field; EDU220, EDU226 and EDU290, with a minimum GPA of 2.25 in these areas. Demonstrated interest in teaching; program approval.

EDU450 Corrective Techniques in Teaching Reading (3 semester hours)
Advanced course to be taken after successful completion of the methods practicum or student teaching. Emphasizes diagnostic testing and teaching to remedy reading difficulties likely to be encountered in the classroom, including the reading problems of multicultural and exceptional children. Students participate in tutoring as part of the course.
Prerequisites: EDU375 or EDU475 and EDU348.

EDU475 Student Teaching (9 semester hours)
Student teaching is a senior experience granting 9 semester hours of credit. It may be taken any term after the student has completed all professional education courses required by the state and all courses required in the student's area of concentration. A grade point average of 2.5 is required prior to student teaching. Students with an earned baccalaureate degree must satisfactorily complete 18 semester hours at Aurora University prior to student teaching.
Prerequisites: Consent of College of Education Initial Certification program director.
