MBA Tool Courses (2 semester hours each)

MBA511 Principles of Management
The function of management concepts in a contemporary business environment is explained in depth, along with organizational structures, leadership styles and the history of management science.

MBA512 Foundations of Accounting
This course is an introduction to basic financial and managerial accounting concepts from the viewpoint of the user. Emphasis is in developing critical decision-making skills through the study of problems and cases. It will also cover financial statement analysis.

MBA513 Principles of Marketing
This course is an introduction to the processes, problems and policies involved in getting goods and services from producers to consumers; market strategy and planning, pricing, promotion, distribution and product policy.

MBA514 Foundations of Economics
This course is an introduction to the domestic and global economies, business cycles, unemployment and inflation. They will also be exposed to the economic decision process of firms and individuals as they attempt to maximize their relative well-being.

MBA515 General Statistics
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the principles of descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics will include: measures of central tendency, variability, probability, standard scores, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing, correlation and regression analysis.

MBA601 Environmental Influences of Management
The primary purpose of this course is to sensitize students to the many and varied external factors that are instrumental in shaping the business environment within which strategic decisions are made. Specifically, the course will examine the changing relationship between business and government and the growing body of rules and regulations that govern the conduct of business. In addition attention is directed at the physical, technological, ethical and "stakeholder" environments against a backdrop of global competition in order to better understand how they impact managerial decision-making.
Prerequisites: MBA511 - MBA515 or undergraduate business major degree

MBA602 Marketing Management
The primary purpose of this course is to determine how to develop marketing strategy. Students will develop a client focus and learn how to target a market. They will also study pricing strategies. As a result of completing this course, the student will be able to conduct market planning analysis, solve an array of marketing problems, develop marketing strategies and implement introductory marketing campaigns.
Prerequisite: MBA601

MBA603 Organizational Management and Leadership
This course is designed to further the student's understanding of management and leadership in organizational settings. The primary emphasis of the course is on the leadership aspect of organizational management. Theoretical constructs, empirical research, and practical suggestions are analyzed in the context of today's intertwined global economy. Students will gain a formal structure in which to analyze and enhance their own leadership capabilities as well as those of others.
Prerequisite: MBA602

MBA604 Business Research Methods
The purpose of this course is to enable students to possess a working knowledge of the key forms of business research methods. The students will learn how to collect secondary business research sources from multiple databases, including a variety of electronic databases. The student will learn how to write business research papers employing proper data gathering citation approaches. The student will also examine primary quantitative and qualitative sources of research and learn how to interpret primary data results into meaningful findings.
Prerequisite: MBA603

MBA605 Techniques in Financial Analysis
This course explores the relationship between management decisions and financial results, interpretation of financial reports, the development of financial projections, the evaluation of investment decisions, capital budgeting under risk and uncertainty, the cost of capital and estimation of the value of a business or a security.
Prerequisite: MBA604

MBA606 Investments
This course is designed to provide a bird's-eye view of the investing environment. We will give you a tour of the major types of markets in which securities trade, the trading process, and the major players in these arenas. You will see that both markets and securities have evolved to meet the changing and complex needs of different participants in the financial system. Portfolio Theory will be discussed as well as the notion of diversification. The final portion of the class will provide an introduction to fixed-income markets and securities and other alternative investments.

MBA607 Human Resource Management
This course covers the basic concepts of individual and social behavior as they apply to the modern organizational environment and day-to-day issues of human resource management. Specific topics to be incorporated include communication, motivation, training and development, compensation, and labor relation issues, such as minority rights, sexual harassment and environmental concerns. Emphasis will be placed on organizational development and team building.

MBA608 Management Information Systems
This course explores information as a fundamental resource of any organization, what information systems are, how they affect the organization, and how they can make the enterprise more competitive and efficient. Ethical aspects, business system concepts, global information and the Internet, and current technological issues are investigated.
Prerequisite: MBA607

MBA609 Operations Management
This course will cover the basics of operations management. Specific topics to be incorporated include process analysis, capacity management, and production and staffing plans. Linear programming will be introduced and used extensively to solve for production and staffing problems.
Prerequisite: MBA608

MBA610 Entrepreneurship
In this course students will develop complete business plans for a new business. The following tasks will be undertaken: managerial planning utilizing the customer; competition over market analysis; providing financial resources to support firm's strategy; and managing information flows.
Prerequisite: MBA609

MBA611 Strategic Management
This course will cover strategic and tactical planning, budgeting, analysis of decision under uncertainty and change. Issues related to making ethical judgment and leadership are also covered. Teams of students compete in managing a simulated business in a computer-simulated competitive global marketplace.
Prerequisite: MBA610

MBA550/588 Seminar in International Management
Offered either on campus or on location at an international site (e.g., Paris, Mexico, London or some other trading partner), this seminar focuses on how management varies in international environments. Topics include cultural variation, international currency, ISO9000, and international technological life cycles.
