Alumni News and Notes:
Biology graduate receives Distinguished Alumni Award
Homecoming weekend
2004 provided an opportunity to celebrate Aurora University, Aurora College,
and George Williams College for current and former students, staff, alumni,
and friends of AU. The weekend was especially memorable for one graduate
of the Aurora University biology program who was presented with the Distinguished
Alumni Award on Saturday, October 9, at the Aurora Country Club.
Stephen Gephard graduated from Aurora College in 1974
with a bachelor's degree in biology with an emphasis in environmental
science. After earning a master's degree in fisheries biology, he went
to work with the State of Connecticut's Department of Environmental Protection
where he has worked since 1978. Over the years, he has garnered international
recognition for his work with Atlantic salmon and fish passage issues
in the four northeastern basin states. In 2002, President George W. Bush
appointed Gephard as a U.S. commissioner to the North Atlantic Salmon
Conservation Organization, an international treaty commission charged
with managing Atlantic salmon in the north Atlantic Ocean.
Gephard's award was presented by David Horn, assistant professor of
biology.
