Homecoming 1998 Alumni Awards

Outstanding Alumnus Award:

Capt. Norman Marshall (GWC) MS '75
Norman is St. Paul area coordinator for the Salvation Army, providing resource and direction for organizational programming in a three country area.  A fifth generation member of the Salvation Army, he led efforts to raise $8.2 million to renovate and build several Salvation Army centers, including a home for abused teens, a community center, and a child care facility.  Since joining the Salvation Army in 1966, he has served on staffs in Indiana, Missouri, Minnesota, and Illinois.  Norman lives in Oakvale, Minnesota.

Dr. Fred Clothey (AU) BA, BTh '57
Dr. Fred Clothey is chair of the department of religious studies at the University of Pittsburgh.  Fred has been interviewed about the changing religious language of North America on Lehrer News Hour and ABC Nightly News.  This summer, Fred traveled to Hyderabad, India with a group of students.  he will teach at Charles University in Prague this fall as a Fulbright Fellow and will be on sabbatical writing a book in winter 1999.  He lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.


Alma Mater Award:

Dr. Marshall Brucer (GWC) '37
The late Dr. Marshall H. Brucer was a nuclear medicine pioneer and founder and first chairman of the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies.  A leading physician and prolific writer, he was also known for developing the use of radioactive cobalt and cesium in treating cancer.  In 1958, Marshall became the first president of the Society for Nuclear Medicine.  He received the Atomic Energy Commission's Citation for Outstanding Achievement in 1965.  Marshall died in 1994 at the age of 80.  He is survived by his wife, Pat, and a son, John.


Recent Alumnus Award:

Dr. Shenin Sachedina (AU) BS '85
Shenin is founder of the Central Florida Breast Cancer Research Center.  In 1972, she and her family (including brothers Azeem (AU) BA '77, Zahir (AU) BA '81, and Moezali (AU) '90)  fled to the U.S. from Uganda.  After earning a degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Shenin's intern experiences stimulated her interest in surgery and breast cancer.  She lives in Orlando, Florida.


Distinguished Graduate School Alumnus Award:

Commander William Lawler (AU) MS '87
Bill is commander, support services with the Aurora Police Department.  In his 20 years with the department, he has received 11 commendations and was named 1989's "Policeman of the Year."  Bill has served as chairman of the employee review board and Police Week, and is a member of the Illinois Chiefs Association.  He was instrumental in the design of the 911 Center and is a leading advocate for senior citizens.  He lives in Aurora.


Athletic Hall of Fame Awards 1998:

Harry Patterson (AU) BA '62
Although Harry Patterson retired in 1994 after 32 years of teaching fifth grade in West Aurora School District #129, he's as busy as ever.  His expertise in the areas of beekeeping, farming, and outdoor education lends itself to his hands-on science presentations in schools statewide.  Harry's demonstrations challenge children's thinking through fun hands-on activities.  He also served as tennis coach at West Aurora High School for 22 years, leading the 1996 girls team to its first ever championship.  Harry was selected as the 1996 Illinois Coach of the Year.  A graduate of West High, he was inducted into their athletic hall of fame in 1998.  Harry lives in North Aurora, Illinois.

Michael Drew (AU) BA '75
Mike has taught physical education at Yorkville's Circle Center Middle School for 24 years.  He also coached middle school basketball and high school cross country.  Mike and his wife, Janet (Easter) Drew (AU) '73 have three daughters, Kristen, is a junior at AU.  Mike's father, Rick Drew (AU) BA '39 is also in the AU Athletic Hall of Fame.  Mike enjoys running, basketball, and fast pitch softball.  He has played softball in Canada and Japan.  In 1987, he made it to the final tryouts for the U.S. Pan American Team.  He lives in Montgomery, Illinois.

Joe Nauman (AU) BA '89
Joe is a salesperson for Lawson Products.  After coming to AU from Rock Valley Junior College, he immediately became a starter at middle linebacker.  "Joe was one of the reasons our new program went from an inexperienced team to a regionally ranked team in 1987," said Jon Cooper, AU assistant football coach.  He led the team in tackles in both 1987 and 1988.  In 1988 he ws named defensive captain, team MVP, defensive MVP, and received an honorable mention All-American.  During his senior year, Joe tried out with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  He is now defensive line coach for AU's football team.  Joe lives in Yorkville, Illinois.

Brian Fetterolf (AU) BA '91
Brian is a teacher and coach at Glenbard East High School.  At AU, he was outstanding both in the classroom and on the football field.  He was one of the best free safeties in NCAA Division III history.  Brian holds the AU record for 120 tackles in the 1986 season and led the team in interceptions in 1986, 1988, and 1989.  He was named First Team All-American in 1989 (AU's first) and was ranked second in the nation with 10 interceptions in both 1988 and 1989.  He was the team's defensive captain in 1989 and was named team MVP in 1986 and 1989.  After graduation Brian played professional football in the Euro League with the Lymon Griffins of Sweden.  He lives in Lombard, Illinois.
