Distinguished Alumni Award:
Richard
L. Bowers, GWC B.S. ’62
Richard L. Bowers received a bachelor’s
degree from George Williams College in 1962 in group work education.
He currently is a semiretired district manager for Severn Trent
Environmental Services in Jacksonville, FL. He previously was President
of Richard Bowers and Associates consulting, served as the Vice
President for Community Affairs for the PGA Tour and was the Senior
Executive Officer for the Office of the Mayor in Jacksonville.
He also was the Director of Housing and Urban Development for the
City of Jacksonville, served as the Deputy Secretary for the Department
of Community Affairs for the state of Florida and was the Executive
Director of the Jacksonville Community Council. Throughout his
career, his work has continually focused on improving the lives
of others through community service.

Stewart A. Brown, GWC B.S. ’55
Stewart A.
Brown’s long career with the YMCA began as Youth
and Camp Director at the Oak Park, IL, YMCA. From there, he became
Camping Services Executive at Camp Tockwogh in Wilmington, DE;
Youth and Camping Director at the Muskegon, MI, YMCA; Camping Services
Executive at Camp Greenville (SC); Director of Camp Minikani for
the Milwaukee YMCA; and Vice President for Program Development
and Camping at the Atlanta Metro YMCA. In his last position for
the YMCA, he worked for the executive camping services branch of
the Milwaukee YMCA. Brown received a bachelor’s degree from
George Williams College in group work education in 1955.

Marvel (Evans) Davis, AU B.S. ’55
Marvel Davis received a bachelor’s degree in education with
Gold Leaf honors from Aurora College in 1955. She retired from teaching
with 23 years of experience, including a one-room country school
in DeKalb County, as well as from Kaneland schools, the Nancy Hill
School, and serving as a reading consultant. She is now a lifelong
member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. In 1980, she
took over the management of the farm that had been in her husband’s
family since 1836. She also started a museum and the first public
library in Big Rock, IL. In addition, She has served for 12 years
as a member of the Kane County Historic Preservation Commission,
as well as a church pianist and organist at the Big Rock Baptist
Church for more than 40 years.

Fern E. (Cottrell) Likhite, AU B.S. ’55
For 34 years, Fern
Cottrell Likhite has been a family physician. She joined a private
practice in Plattsburgh, NY, after spending five years working
in the Chicago area, where she served as a member of the attending
staff of the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center.
She was also on staff at several nursing homes. In 1977, Dr. Likhite
took over the practice from her mentor. She went into solo practice
in the early 1990s. She closed her practice to retire in 2000,
when she began working part time for Lake City Primary Care in
Plattsburgh. Dr. Likhite graduated from Aurora College in 1955
with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and received Gold
Ivy Leaf honors.
