
Stephen W. Sawyer specializes in urban political history with an emphasis on the role of cities in territorial and state construction in the Atlantic world. He has taught courses in American Civilization for the
agrégation at the
Ecole Normale Supérieure (rue d’Ulm), the history of planning theory for the Master’s program in Urban Planning at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, and was Lecturer in History at the University of Chicago from 2003-2008. He is currently preparing a book manuscript for publication on the history of the Paris Municipality from 1789-1880. In recent articles, he has begun exploring trans-Atlantic urban development and the structural role of cities in defining political modernities.
