
Visit Paris and France as you have never visited them before. Dr. Stephen Sawyer will lead you through Paris recounting how this once distant city on the edge of the Roman Empire became one of the great cultural capitals of the world. You will also enjoy day trips to Versailles, Loire Valley and Metz. While in Paris, you will take historical walks through the city tracing its history from the Ancient Roman ruins to the Paris of today. Stephen Sawyer, a Paris resident, is Chair of the History Department at the American University of Paris and a past lecturer in History at the University of Chicago from 2003-2008. He has taught urban history at several prestigious French universities and has taken three groups of AU students to Paris for May Term travel/study courses in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

- A tour of ancient and Medieval Paris with stops at the Roman baths, the arena, the crypt and Notre Dame
- Visits to the Louvre, Place Dauphine and Palais Royal
- Day trip to Versailles
- Day trip to the Loire Valley to see two spectacular châteaux: Blois and Chambord
- Paris of the 19th century: Impressionists at the musée d'Orsay, the Place de la Concorde and the Opéra
- Day trip to Metz to view the innovative Centre Pompidou-Metz and spectacular stained glass of the Metz cathedral
