Having served as a parks and recreation professional in the public sector for over 30 years, I believe that the practical application of academic material should be the major component of all my classes.  That includes the teaching of action research with which all future professionals need to be familiar. I believe that the development of critical thinking skills is essential to the higher education process, and how a student presents herself or himself is more important than the grades they receive.
